Moodboard #1 feedback

The main points that i got from my feedback after presenting my mood board were:

  • Focus more on gay pride instead of tribes. Tribes are going a bit off topic. Sharon mentioned that i should look into groups within gay pride festivals such as a group who wear immaculate make up but dress as nuns.
  • Focus on the research and the story behind it instead of focusing my mood board on everything make up related. If i have an idea and research the background of it then i can create face charts from that.
  • Look into punks and rebels from different eras. Punks were known for wearing badges on their clothing that were very powerful and often offensive.
  • Look at urban art such as graffiti as that symbolises rebels in society because they arent allowed to spray paint of random buildings, it’s illegal.
  • Find some images that are inspirational to some of the ideas that i have. Sharon showed me the ‘beauty papers’ magazine which is all inspiring images for makeup artists however the images don't necessarily have anything to do with make up.
Overall my classmates liked my use of bright colours and bold text. They said that the images were very strong, bold, bright colours. From this feedback i understand where i want to focus on and progress to. I want to stick with gay pride and steer away from tribes, use a lot of bright, bold colours and do more research into different groups within gay pride festivals. As for the rebel groups shown on the left i am not sure if i want to include those, i want to see how much information and inspiration i can get from gay pride first and then try and incorporate them in if i can.

Analysing a beauty advert

What Maybelline have tried to do with this advert is show how their Anti- age 'The Eraser' foundation can correct all of your ageing skin problems.

For example:
- Fine lines
- Dark circles
- Crow's feet

They have clearly photoshopped the image in post production to make the skin where they are trying to give the illusion that the foundation is on is flawless and all of those ageing problems have gone because of their product. The skin where the foundation isn't covering looks like a regular person's skin with regular foundation on with the additional problems they are claiming their foundation can cover.

In reality if you have fine lines, crows feet or dark circles only botox/ laser surgery is going to fix those issues. Once you have those issues there is no going back. You can attempt to try and hide them and make them look less distinctive on the skin however it is a texture issue on the skin so it will show through the foundation anyway. A lot of skincare has been targeted at these problems too which is why it is popular to try and get rid of these issues with the help of makeup as well as skincare.

It claims that this foundation has taken 7 years worth of research to create and get right. It also states that it has 3 patents, meaning that it has 3 solutions that have been scientifically proven to the problems shown in the ad, those being fine lines, dark circles and crows feet. Whether they are true, i don't know. They may improve the issues however, the customer's skin will never look flawless like the image as it has been clearly photoshopped. They have since updated the foundation and they call the foundation 'a treatment' and it now has 5 patents instead of 3. One being the new 'Patented Micro-Corrector Applicator micro-fills and smoothes imperfections on skin's surface'.

Maybelline as a brand appeals to women in their 20's who can't afford high end makeup but are still looking for some good quality. In the last few years they have changed a lot of their packaging and products to look more sleek and modern instead of the cheap, tacky packaging some beauty brands use to attract teens, this has made the target audience move away from teenagers to a higher, more sophisticated age group who still want some cheaper makeup.

The makeup in this ad is very simple and the composition of the photo is focused on the face and part of the neck. This draws attention to the fact they are advertising a foundation, so therefore you should look at the skin on the face. Natural eye makeup so it doesn't distract attention away from the skin.

Moodboard #1

As mentioned in my previous post about 'my word' you can see the links through my mood board that i have made with:
- Rebel groups
- Tribes (Nukak)
- Gay pride

Rebel groups:
The pictures shown in my mood board representing rebel groups show the headscarves that i said i really liked the idea of. I think they would frame the face really well when shooting my editorial look. I like the use of bright colours in headscarves.
Another link is also linking the rebel groups to the Nukak tribe, a certain rebel group took away all medicine supplies from the Nukak tribe and it caused a lot of trouble.

Nukak tribe:
I really love the geometric lines that the nukak tribe wear in red on their face. I took inspiration from this and decided that i wanted to include geometric lines in my editorial shoot. I want the lines to be structured so they represent the straight lines the nukak tribe use. However i want to take inspiration from gay pride and instead of having all the lines in red or one colour i want the look to be vibrant and bright, representing gay pride and the colours they use throughout the festival.

Gay pride:
Obviously homosexuals have not always been accepted in society. i wanted to take the fact that some time ago they were seen as 'rebels' in society and it was not right to be gay. I wanted to take the colours that they used being really bright and bold colours and incorporate that into the geometric lines that represent the nukak tribe.

Another aspect i wanted to bring into the look was textures within the make up. This represents the mess that rebel groups and protesters against homosexuality have caused in the world. Not every thing goes smoothly and not everyone under stands that it's widely accepted now to be homosexual.

My word (Rebel)

My chosen word was 'Rebel'. Originally when i first thought of this word i instantly thought of school children and people who go against the law and commit crimes. However, that's the one aspect of it i didn't want to go into as it was stating the obvious.

I then thought of rebel groups such as ISIS, Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda etc. This is a controversial topic at the moment as a lot of terrible things have happened in the world recently because of the actions of these groups. One part of the rebel groups that i wanted to incorporate into my final image is the headscarves some of them seem to wear.

After researching more into rebel groups i came across a rebel group that stripped a columbian tribe, known as the Nukak tribe, of all their emergency medicine and a a lot of people fell ill because of it, some even resulting in death. The Nukak tribe stood out to me as they have a very distinctive way of expressing the fact that they belong in the tribe. They wear red stripes, almost like a geometric pattern on their face. That was something that stood out to me instantly, something i definitely want to take inspiration from for my look.

As well as thinking of rebel groups, i twisted that and thought of groups of people who were seen as 'rebels'. I first thought of suffragettes and people from different ethnic backgrounds, then i thought of homosexual people. This has been a big topic recently because of the recent change in law meaning that people of the same sex can now legally get married. This topic is also close to my heart as my best friend came out last year as gay and i have just watched him blossom into the most amazing person now that he is comfortable with himself and who he is. I am so so proud of him.

Whenever i think of homosexuality i think of gay pride and the rainbow of colours that are used throughout the festival. This gave me inspiration to use a lot of bright colours within my makeup. Colours attract the eye instantly and i expresses a range of emotions.

'Rebel'

When i first got the word "rebel' i thought of people who go against the norms in society. I instantly thought of the police force and other services like that, that stop 'rebels' in society. However, because this was my first thought i knew that i didn't want to do anything surrounding that as it was too obvious.

From this i was thinking about what makes people rebellious. Rude gestures are seen as rebellious especially if you are of a young age and doing it to your friends or god forbid an elder. This was an idea for some poses that i could get my model to do to show rebellious behaviour.

- Gay Pride
- Feminists
- Mods and Rockers
- Hippies
These could all be seen as groups of rebels as they were against a norm in society or part of a movement that the majority of people didnt agree with.

Rebel groups also came to mind as something a bit different as i dont think many people would choose to think about them as they cause so much devastation in the world. I thought of groups such as:
- ISIS
- Al Qaeda
- Taliban
etc.
The thought of those groups kind of makes you feel uncomfortable so i was trying to think of a topic that i could link with those groups but move away from it. I was looking on the internet at stories about these groups and a tribe known as the 'Nukak' tribe came up as a story. All of their medicine supplies had been taken away by a rebel group and a lot of people were dying and falling ill. The reason this tribe stood out to me was because of the make up they wore on their face to identify with each other. It looked like red warpaint in geometric patterns and i thought that could be a good idea for a make up look.

Looking at photos of rebel groups i also like the idea of incorporating a turban style scarf as a lot of them had these around their heads whilst fighting, i think that could be a good aspect of an image and a way to frame the face and bring out the make up and features a lot more.

Evaluation of feedback from Digital Image 1

The over all feedback on my first digital image project was very positive however there were a few parts that let me down.

Chris liked my over all images and thought they went well. He liked the way i did my mood board and described what was on it and why. However when placing the final images into the template on InDesign the images appeared a lot darker and they were stretched. I thought i sorted this issue at the time, however i can't have. I will definitely take note of this in future and check with Peter that my images aren't affected when placed in a template.

When Sharon looked over the mark Chris has given and remarked it she scored me lower than Chris because of my blog. There was a lack of posts on research and practice that i had done before the final shoots. I agree with everything that she said as i knew myself i didn't do a lot of blog posts on my digital image blog and lacked A LOT of research. This is something i am trying to improve for digital image 2.

They both mentioned how they can see i have grown in confidence and my knowledge around photography is a lot better after the first brief. I personally think i am a lot more confident now when it comes to photography and setting up the studio etc. The only part i feel that i need to improve on is post production as there is so much you can change in an image using all the different programmes i need a better understanding of how to use them all.
